Benefits from E-SURFMAR Operational Service for EUMETNET members are the following:
- Delivery of sea level pressure (SLP) observations in the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea and the Arctic. SLP is an essential meteorological parameter which cannot be presently measured by satellites. As shown in several studies, the impact of one SLP observation carried out by a drifting buoy is five times higher than this of a land station (see for instance ECMWF Technical Memorandum No. 679 - figure 38 page 56). Weather forecasts are improved thanks to E-SURFMAR observations. All EUMETNET members benefit from them, not only those financially contributing to the service.
- Reducing of satellite communication costs for all surface marine observations thanks to compression techniques or migration to more cost-effective systems than those used previously.
- Acompanying participating members in their increasing use of shipborne automated weather stations (S-AWS). Writing of common specifications for the procurement of S-AWS which would meet both national and E-SURFMAR objectives. Choice of a manufacturer further a EUMETNET call for tender.
- Maintenance and share of expertise between participating members thanks to forums meeting E-SURFMAR experts: exchanges on current and future techniques and systems required for the delivery of surface marine observations.
- Fruitful cooperation with non-meteorological organisations operating moored buoys in European waters in order to have their data sent onto the GTS and monitored in quasi real-time.
- Contribution to the Data Buoy Cooperation Panel (JCOMM/DBCP) and the Ship Observations Team (JCOMM/SOT).
- Providing of GTS Data Quality Control Tools on the Web. These may be used by any data buoy or observing ship operator in the world.
- Provision of a Voluntary Observing Ship (VOS) metadata database to manage European fleets but devoted to contain all metadata of VOS operating in the world.
